The PlayStation 3 was launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan (100,000 units), on November 17, 2006 in North America (400,000 units), and on March 23, 2007 in Europe, Russia, Middle East and Australia (1,000,000 units). of which 50,000 in the Benelux). The launch in the PAL territories was postponed due to a delay in the mass production of a component of the Blu-ray player. The console mainly competes against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. Together, these belong to the so-called seventh generation of game computers. By December 2015, 86 million consoles had been sold worldwide.
In the beginning there were two different configurations, which differed in price and possibilities. There was one with a 40 GB hard drive with no backward compatibility and one with a 60 GB hard drive with backward compatibility. The 60 GB version also had an SD/MMC card, CompactFlash/Microdrive and Memory Stick card reader and four USB ports instead of two on the 40 GB version.
At the end of 2007, it was announced that no new 60 GB version would be produced, eliminating backward compatibility. An 80 GB version was released in 2008 and a 160 GB hard drive version later that year. Versions with hard drives of 120 and 250 GB respectively followed in 2009. In July 2010, Sony released two more new slim versions of 160 and 320 GB respectively. The 320 GB model came with a Move starter pack.
