Sega Master System is almost entirely based on the SG-1000 Mark III (1985), released by Sega only in Japan. In particular, the appearance was redesigned and the optional Yamaha sound chip was now installed as standard. Sega launched the game console in the US and Europe after Nintendo's success with the NES. Despite the fact that the SMS was technically much better than the NES, it has not been a great success, especially in the US. Many more game manufacturers produced for Nintendo, which made them the market leader. In 1990 the Sega Master System II was released, this was a cheaper, smaller and stripped down version of the SMS. In this version, the card slot, the connection for the 3D glasses, the LED light and the reset button have disappeared. In 1992, Sega stopped supporting SMS in the US, but in Europe where Sega was more successful they continued to provide support until 1996.
