The PlayStation 3 was launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan (100,000 units), on November 17, 2006 in North America (400,000 units) and on March 23, 2007 in Europe, Russia, Middle East and Australia ( of which 50,000 in the Benelux). Launch in the PAL areas was delayed due to a delay in mass production of a component of the Blu-ray player. The console mainly competes against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
