The Xbox is a game console from Microsoft. It was released in North America on November 15, 2001, in Japan on February 22, 2002, and entered the European market on March 14, 2002.
The name Xbox comes from "DirectX Box" (derived from Microsoft's API DirectX), one of the codenames during the development of the game console, which developers quickly shortened to "Xbox" in internal emails. After a battle with the marketing department, this name eventually won off a long list of acronyms.
