The Nintendo 64 (abbreviation: N64) is the third in a successful series of game consoles released by Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 and was the successor to the successful Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Due to its original form and the new kind of controller that Nintendo brought to market, the Nintendo 64 became a modest success with more than 30 million units sold, despite competition from Sony's hugely popular PlayStation (released in Europe in 1995). The Nintendo 64 kept going and successful games continued to come out. The successor to the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, appeared in 2001, but the Nintendo 64 remained available until 2003.
Nintendo released many classics such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64.
