The Pro Evolution Soccer series is known for its realism and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 contains many new gameplay additions. The artificial intelligence of the players has been greatly improved, so that players now run well into space even when the ball is not nearby. Similarly, they point where they want the ball to continue the attack.
The physical side of the game has also been improved. For example, attacking players can send a defender the wrong way while receiving the ball. Conversely, defenders can learn not to get too close to the opponent to avoid being played past.
Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka, the mastermind behind the series, has worked on a refined shooting system. This allows players to unleash more unexpected shots than in previous versions and has rethought the mechanics for volleys and half volleys. Other new moves include the ability to control the ball while sliding.
