The Nintendo 64 (abbreviation: N64) is the third in a successful series of game consoles released by Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 and was the successor to the successful Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
With its original shape and new kind of controller introduced by Nintendo, the Nintendo 64 became a modest success with over 30 million units sold, despite competition from Sony's hugely popular PlayStation (released in 1995 in Europe). The Nintendo 64 stayed on its feet and successful games continued to come out. In 2001, the Nintendo 64's successor, the GameCube, was released, but the Nintendo 64 remained available until 2003.
Nintendo released many classics such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64.
