    The story takes place in Sanctuary twenty years after the events of Diablo II. A star has landed on the old cathedral (where Diablo i was set). The main character is sent to it. It turns out that the two remaining lesser evils Belial and Azmodan are behind it.

    The different acts are very varied: Act I is set in and around New Tristram, Act II in the sandy area around Caldeum, Act III in the crater of Mount Arreat and Act IV in the High Heavens.

    Players are given a choice of five character classes: Barbarian, Monk, Witch Doctor, Wizard and Demon Hunter. The choice between male or female sex is new. The multiplayer aspect of the game, as with sharing, is handled through Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net.

    The gameplay has largely remained the same except for the skill points, which are no longer there. They have been replaced by active and passive skills that can be automatically unlocked per level. It is also possible to upgrade skills with skill runes.
